vanessa hudgens the american beauty and teenage diva. Zac efron teen role model and music rock star. While they were shooting the first High School Musical in 2005, a real-life romance quietly blossomed between teenage stars Zac Efron, 19, and Vanessa Hudgens, 18, PEOPLE reports in its latest cover story.

And while filming its sequel, HSM2 this spring, the two were still going strong. "They were sitting on each other's laps and holding hands," says a restaurant hostess who was on the scene. "It was really cute."

Efron and Hudgens, both raised in California, have kept their romance scrupulously low-profile. On the HSM2 set, "if you didn't know they were dating, you wouldn't know they were dating," says a production source. "They're really good at not being obvious."

Vanessa hudgens and zac efron romantic couple

You are fine
You are sweet
But I'm still a bit naive with my heart
When you're close I don't breathe
I can't find the words to speak
I feel sparks
But I don't wanna start seeing you
If I can't be your only one
So tell me when it's not alright
When it's not ok
Will you try to make me feel better?
Will you say alright? (say alright)
Will you say ok? (Say ok)
Will you stick with me through whatever?
Or run away
Say ok
When you call I don't know if I should pick up the phone every time
I'm not like all my friends who keep calling up the boys, I'm so shy
But I don't wanna be into you
If you don't treat me the right way
See I can only start seeing you
If you can make my heart feel safe (feel safe)

zanessa break up or still together

we 're glad to hear they can still be friends…or at least that there's no bad blood between them.

It was a wildcat kind of night at the SoHo House in West Hollywood last night as a bunch of ashley tisdale's HSM friends came out

to support the release of her new movie, Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure - including former lovers zac efron and vanessa hudgens

When we first heard about their reunion we were skeptical that all was well, especially when the pair obliged to pose with The Tis, but not with each other. Thankfully, we hear that their reunion was "friendly" and no drama went down between them on their friend's big night. One source reveals:

"Zac and Vanessa definitely seemed comfortable around each other. They didn't seem affectionate or romantic at all, but they were totally relaxed and friendly."

Another on-looker observed that the two definitely seemed like they were still "friends," and added that the whole crew, which included other HSM costars like Lucas Grabeel and Olesya Rulin, "stayed late" to catch up with one another.

Looks like they can all just get along. Bet that wouldn
